The unit is parts per thousand (ppt stands for parts per thousand). The average salinity of the world’s seawater is 35 ppt. Freshwater is not more than 0.5 ppt. Brackish water is 0.5 – 25 ppt. Salinity values will vary depending on the amount of precipitation, water from snowmelt.
