Learn about torque measuring devices, torque wrenches, and torque screwdrivers; how to choose the right torque tightening equipment.

Torque measuring devices are used to measure the rotational force acting on an object, while torque wrench (torque wrench) It is a specialized tool used to tighten bolts and nuts with a precise torque as required by technical specifications.

The main difference between a torque gauge and a torque wrench lies in their purpose: a torque gauge is used to check and measure the applied torque, while a torque wrench is a tool used to apply a precise tightening force (torque) to a bolt or nut.

Torque measuring device:

Torque is a physical quantity that expresses the rotational effect of a force, commonly measured in Newton-meters (N·m). Torque measuring devices (torque meters or torque sensors) are used to determine this torque in a variety of applications, from engine testing to product packaging.

The main types of torque measuring devices include:

  • Torque Sensor: This is a converter that transforms a mechanical torque input into an electrical output signal, commonly used to measure static or dynamic torque in machinery and motor systems.

  • Digital Torque Tester: Handheld or desktop devices with a display screen showing measured data (e.g., bottle cap opening/closing force, tightening force of electronic tools).

Main purpose: To measure, analyze, test, and calibrate other force instruments.
Function: Provides a real-world measurement value, often with very high accuracy, used in laboratories or quality control.

Types of torque wrenches (torque wrenches)

Torque wrenches are essential hand tools that allow users to apply a precise tightening force, avoiding overtightening that can damage threads or overtightening that reduces the strength of the connection. There are four common types of torque wrenches:

  • Click-Type Torque Wrench (Micrometer): The most common type allows for adjustable torque by rotating the handle. When the set torque is reached, the device will emit a "click" sound to signal the user to stop.

  • Dial Torque Wrench: There is a torque gauge that displays the actual torque value being applied. This type allows for continuous readings during tightening.
  • Digital Torque Wrench: The most modern types use electronic sensors to measure and display torque values on an LCD screen. They often include additional features such as audible/vibration alerts, data storage, and high accuracy.

  • Interchangeable Head Torque Wrench: The wrench body can be fitted with various types of heads (socket heads, open-end wrenches, etc.) to suit specific types of nuts and bolts.

Main purpose: To apply a precise (pre-set) tightening torque to mechanical parts such as bolts and nuts.
Function: Controls the tightening process, ensuring the tightening force is neither too weak nor too strong, usually with a signal (click, light, vibration) when the desired force is reached.

TOHNICHI ATG / BTG Torque Gauge | Genuine Torque Measuring Device semiki.com

To choose the right Tohnichi torque wrench, you need to carefully consider the technical aspects of the job, including the torque range, the type of socket to be used, and the working environment.

1. Determine the required torque range.

This is the most important factor. You need to know the minimum and maximum torque required for your bolted/nut connections.

  • Rule 20% – 100%: Torque wrenches operate most accurately when used within their measuring range of 20% to 100%.
  • For example: If the required torque is 80 N·m and 120 N·m, you should choose a wrench with a torque range of approximately 30–210 N·m (for example, model QL280N) instead of one with a range of 10–50 N·m or 200–500 N·m.
  • Tohnichi offers various models with different units (N·m, kgf·cm, lbf·in), please ensure you select the correct unit of measurement for your work.

2. Select the Type of Torque Wrench

Tohnichi offers a variety of product lines to meet different needs:

  • Adjustable Type (Series QL, CL, DQL): Suitable if you need to tighten various types of fasteners with different torque settings. They have a scale on the body for easy torque setting. A "click" sound will be heard when the desired torque is reached.
  • Fixed/Preset Force Type (Preset Type – Series QSP, CSP, SP): Ideal for mass production where only a single, repeated tightening force is required. This type has no scale, preventing errors caused by users incorrectly adjusting the torque.
  • Digital display type: Offers high accuracy, data storage capabilities, and audible/vibration alerts. Typically used in applications requiring strict quality control.
  • Interchangeable Head Type (Series CL, CSP, RSP): The wrench body can be fitted with various types of heads (socket, ring, open end), saving costs if you need to use many different types of heads.

3. Consider the Work Environment

  • Oily environment: Choose models with a textured metal handle (QL-MH, CSP-MH series) to prevent slipping.
  • Small spaces: Consider using a wrench of the appropriate length or one with a detachable head for easier access to the joint.
  • Electrical applications: Tohnichi offers a line of insulated wrenches to protect users from electric shock.

4. Check Accessories and Specifications

  • Make sure the square drive size (1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″,…) matches the socket set you have.
  • Check if the product comes with a calibration certificate, as regular calibration is crucial for maintaining the accuracy of Tohnichi torque wrenches.
