The importance of checking and measuring belt tension. How to use a belt tension measuring device.

Job measuring belt tension Belts are extremely important because they directly affect the performance, durability of machinery, and operating costs. Incorrect tension—whether too loose or too tight—can have serious consequences.

1. If the belt is too loose (lacks tension)

  • Slippage: This is the most common problem, causing energy loss and reduced drive efficiency.
  • Excessive heat generation: Friction during sliding generates high temperatures, causing the rubber to harden, crack, and fail prematurely.
  • Pulley groove wear: Constant slippage will wear down the pulley grooves, making replacement much more expensive than simply replacing the belt.
  • Noise: It causes an unpleasant whistling sound when the machine starts or under load.

2. If the belt is too tight (excessive tension)

  • Bearing and shaft failure: Excessive pulling force puts extreme pressure on the bearings, motor shaft, and machine shaft, leading to rapid wear, shaft bending, or bearing burnout.
  • The wire snapped suddenly: The load-bearing core inside the belt is stretched excessively, easily leading to the belt breaking unexpectedly while the machine is in operation.
  • Engine overload: The motor has to work harder to overcome the excess tension, which wastes energy and reduces the motor's lifespan.

3. Benefits of maintaining the correct tension

  • Optimizing lifespan: The belt and related components (pulleys, bearings) achieve maximum durability as designed by the manufacturer.
  • Cost savings: Reduce downtime and spare parts replacement costs.
  • Stable transmission: Ensure that the machinery operates smoothly, accurately, and without vibration.

Advice: Never check thread tension by simply "pressing" it down. Use specialized tools such as a sonar. Unitta U-550 or force meter Mitsuboshi Pencil-1 To compare with the manufacturer's specifications.

Here's how to use two common types of equipment to test belt tension:

Use  Mitsuboshi Pencil-1 (Mechanical/Pen-type) This device measures based on the method deflectionYou need to determine the force required to move the hammock strap a certain distance.

YouTube player
  • Step 1: Install the lower O-ring. Calculate the required sag distance (usually 1.6mm for every 100mm of span length) and place the rubber ring at that position on the pen body.
  • Step 2: Install the O-ring on top. Push the upper rubber ring to the 0 mark on the slider.
  • Step 3: Take the measurement. Place the tip of the pen in the middle of the strap. Press the pen down perpendicularly until the lower O-ring touches the edge of the ruler (or visually relative to the original position of the strap).
  • Step 4: Read the results. Take out your pen and see how far the O-ring has moved. That's the tension (measured in kg or Newtons).

2. Usage Unitta U-550 (Sonic waveform) This device measures tension non-contact by analyzing oscillation frequency of the wire.

YouTube player
  • Step 1: Enter the wire specifications. Use the buttons on the machine to enter the technical data:
    • MASS: Unit weight of wire (g/m).
    • WIDTH: Wire width (mm) or number of teeth.
    • SPAN: Free span length (mm).
  • Step 2: Prepare for measurement. Press the button MEASUREBring the sensor head close to the belt (about 1-2 cm away) but do not touch the belt.
  • Step 3: Create oscillations. Use your hand or a hard object to gently pluck the strap to create a vibration (similar to plucking a guitar string).
  • Step 4: Read the results. The device will process the received sound waves and directly display the tension value (N) or frequency (Hz) on the screen.

Note:

  • With Pencil-1The accuracy depends heavily on the placement of the reference ruler and the angle at which the pen is pressed.
  • With Unitta U-550Please ensure the measurement environment is not too noisy so that the device can capture the most accurate frequency.
